I have a theory about Bowling Green State University Athletics. They are only allowed to have one good major athletic team a year. What do I mean my major? Here is my list:

1. Football


2. Men's Basketball


3. Women's Basketball


4. Hockey


5. Soccer

For the last three years the most dominate team was the women's basketball team. For most people and some of our alumni, they don't care for women's basketball. I'll admit, I'm not a big fan, but my love for BG overrides that. Also if it was not for the Falcon teams of the mid-ninety's, I would probably not be in New Jersey this weekend. My sister shots the women's team every year and make a highlight tape for them. For three years I shot for her. The first year I did maybe 6 games. The second year I did 10 and 1 road game and my busy senior year I shot 8 games. I learned my craft because of them so I will always be a fan.

So this year BG was the best they have ever been. They won a first round game and then shocked people by beating Vanderbilt in the second round. BG was getting national attention. They were even getting consideration for beating Arizona St. Alas, the dream ended with ASU, they beat the falcons handily and BG's season is over. I want to just say thank you for your hard work and for taking our University to a level it has never seen in either basketball programs. You ladies will go down as legends and will always have a place in true falcons hearts. I thank coach Curt Miller for his coaching ability and for turning this team back into a winner. Also please stay at BG and I hope the athletic department will actually do the right thing and give you are raise and keep you as coach

Black Saturday

As I quote John Cusack from High Fidelity

"Some people never got over Nam or when their band open for Nirvana..."

Well, I will never fully get over this past Saturday. As a fan of any sports teams and you will that there will be ups and downs, but as a fan and Alumni of Bowling Green State University I have seen rock bottom and I have just bounced off of it. This week Bowling Green lost to Temple. You may wonder "J-Dog, why is that such a big deal?"

TEMPLE HAD NOT BEATEN A DIVISION I-A TEAM SINCE 2004!

How in the hell does this happen? I know we are not good, but Buffalo beat Temple and Buffalo sucks. Hell we beat Buffalo. I seriously think that we need to let the band play the rest of the year. Hell let the Popular Culture Department play, they can do any worse than what the real team has done.

October, 28th 2006 the worst day to be a fan of the not so mighty Bowling Green Falcons.

This past weekend: SICSIC Edition

This past weekend was homecoming at the ole college Bowling Green State University. For the past seven years I have either had to work or be somewhere else. So when this year I found out I did not have to work on Saturdays I wanted to go see my old stomping grounds. So you might be wondering what's with the weird college kid in the overalls and a mask posing on a car? That my friend is SICSIC! This is the secret spirit organization that has now be going for 60 years. It's the only organization that has been around that entire time. (Side Note: The Theater group on campus found a piece of paper saying that they have been around longer, but they took off, oh I don't 20 years, so they are the oldest, but SICSIC has never stopped.. take that theater bitches!).

So when I heard that this was in fact the 60th anniversary we had to go! I was at BG as a current member during the 50th and I remember they had almost all of the original members and it was interesting to hear all the stories everyone had. A lot of them involved alcohol, but it's BG bonging a beer is almost a requirement for graduation. One of my favorites include one of the members being chased around campus for a couple of miles. He was finally cornered and forced to remove his mask. The guys didn't want him kicked out of the group, because they could tell everyone that he was a member, so they said we won't tell and let him go. Another was when they thought the SICSIC car could make it up the ramp or the library to the second floor. Well, it couldn't make it and got stuck.

I will always remember my time in SICSIC with much fondness. It was something that I and less than 200 people are a part of. It's not only an honorary group, but it's a family. The members that were in the group with me are thought of as family to me. I saw one of the members Bethanee for the first time in almost six years, I was near giddy to see her. I saw Micheal and a flood of memories came back and just made me. Like the time it was Mike, Joe and myself, we went out to the bars dressed up, or naked SICSIC. Someone had the idea we needed to be naked under our suits... Oh to be in college.

The biggest thing about SICSIC it was a release from your daily grind. When we would meet at 11:00 on Tuesdays or Wednesdays we would talk make signs and just hang out. Then we would suit up and become different people. You had no constraints, the mask turned you into a crazy wild person where the normal rules are thrown out the window. You could go up to a stranger and talk to them in a strange voice and make them laugh. Throw candy at someone in the student union, or one of our favorites Student Union hedge dive. Yes we would hurl our selves into the hedges for no other reason to scare people and then make them laugh. Seeing the current members run around made me want to put on a suit and find my mask and join in the SICSIC tidal wave of spirit. If the current members ever find this post... Cherish what you are in. I wish I could have done more and enjoyed it for what it was, the best moments in my college life.

Totally Random

Today at work was just a mish mash of different assignments: shooting an enviromental justice presser, a debate intro segment, and Baja Fresh (a Mexican chain that is owned by Wendy's). Non of these assignments had anything to do with one or another so I'd thought I'd do a blog reflecting my work day. A few random tidbits and info that could not really fill one blog.

Mileage: It will be three years in December since I bought my Mazda and I'm just over 45,000 miles. My work Explorer is just over a year old and has 38,000 miles on it. I'm wondering which car will reach 50,000 first. I'm betting on the Explorer.

Columbus Marathon: This weekend is the Columbus Half Marathon and I think every single person I know will be running in it. If you think I'm kidding Wilson will be driving up from Ironton to "run" in this race. So with so many people I know running in this race you would think I'd be at the finish line watching every one struggle to finish. NAY I'm going to Bowling Green for homecoming.

Ohio Renisanse Festival: Due to financial un-peace I will not be attending this years Ren Fest. We just don't have the money to go to homecoming and drive to the Ren Fest. I did shoot a story, but this will be the first time in five years neither I nor Wilson/Radcliff/Joe will not be attending. I was really looking forward to a turkey leg and seeing some wenches, but alas I can not go. I think this is some kind of sign for an end of an era. I hope not, but if it did I got a lot of great stories and wasted many house in a trailer out in a Holler.

Jackass 2: I went and watched this "movie" with Jeff and Dave from work. All I have to say it that I almost threw up during the "movie." It's everything you expected to see in the TV show, but in a film. I was shocked though that they did sensor some scenes by either blurs or the black bar. I'm happy they used the black bar sometimes, but it was odd so see them. It must have been to keep the film rated R not NC-17.

Best of times worst of times: I'm in a Strat-o-matic baseball league (it's a game that allows you to field a team comprised of any player from any era). I currently have two teams, the Cleveland Indians and the Montreal Expos, and both teams have been the total opposite of each other. Montreal is 81-55 and 8 games up on the second place team, while Cleveland is 59-77 and 9 games back of the team with the worst record to be leading in a division. I acquired Montreal and have not done a lot to them, just added a couple of players to boost some of the week spots, while Cleveland is now on it's third make over, I went for power hitting and then was convinced to move to a larger park to help my pitchers. Well, that hurt the power guys so I had to trade a couple of them off and now I'm back where I started. With Le Expos I'm gearing up for the play-offs and trying to get guys healthy, Cleveland is now looking at back-up guys that may not make the team next year and at the same time tank some games to get a better draft position. Is it a bad idea to drink champagne and Mylanta?

My day at Ohio Stadium

As a Bowling Green State University graduate I am very proud of my university and I want them to look and do well. So when I saw that BGSU was going to play Ohio State I though, crap why this year! If you do not know Ohio State is ranked #1 in the nation and BG is ranked... well we are not ranked. I'm hoping to avoid ESPN's Bottom 10.

So at the game BG gets the ball first and SCORES A TOUCHDOWN. OSU looks stunned and Troy Smith can't do anything, BG's defense is playing lights out and causing problems. Oh what a game! Nobaody expected BG to come out swinging and take a lead and then score again! Oh what a day to be a Falcon! Hoozah to the Falcons Hoozah!

Then I wake up and realize I was dreaming. I noticed a sense of dread for I realized that we were going to loose and loose bad. There is always that hope, it's college football anything can happen, but when you have 15 Freshman playing against the number one team in the entire nation, it's going to be bad.

We get to our seats and I am the only one in orange, wow I'm going to be hated for the entire game. It's time for the coin toss and we win the toss (YEAH! We won something) so we elect to defer to the second half and OSU get the ball first. Alright this is... WHAT THE? Little note for everyone BG's defense is non-existent. I'm serious at times it's like they are using the Tontogany Otsego Hish School defense. "Hey high school kids, wanna play football against Ohio State? Sure!" So OSU drives down the field and score. OSU 7 BG 0

We start our drive and do well. We are throwing the ball well and we have some form of a running game. The drive stalls at 4th and 3 from the 33. We send in the field goal unit. NOOOOO!!! "But J-Dog isn't getting points against Ohio State realy good?" Yes it is unless you suck at kicking field goals. Against Buffalo we had a couple of kicks blocked. So Buffalo one of the worst teams in the country, OSU the best. BLOCK! No points and OSU goes on to score. OSU 14 BG 0

We do nothing on the next drive. We punt the ball away in ugly fashion. They are avoiding Ted Ginn who can run the ball back any time he touches it. So it was a shank, but at least no points were scored. OSU is just picking the Otsego defense apart. We get a break a penalty that makes it 1st and 20 then 2nd and 20 and yet again 3rd and 20. It looks like we are going to stop them and hope they only get a field goal. Troy Smith drops back, looks around it flushed out of the pocket. He runs and continues to run and then runs some more for 32 yards. So OSU then later scores. OSU 21 BG 0

Well it was still the same score at the half we get the ball to start and we start driving the ball. A few yards here and nice pass there. We get down to around the 20. After a penalty it's 4th and 6 and we are going for it. I'm praying "please make it please make it." Anthony Turn fires a pass and we have a first down. YES! Two plays later we score I jump up and yell and I am ecstatic we are not going to be shut out and we are only down 14. OSU 21 BG 7

We get a big stop and look like we can do some damage. 3rd and long, Anthony Turner is back, looks for a receiver can't find one and runs. "GO! GO! GO! GET THE FIRST! He slides down and misses the 1st down by a freaking foot a FREAKING FOOT! TAKE THE DAMN HIT AND GET THE FIRST. OK it's short and I know we can get the first down come on falcons! You can... what the hell is the punter doing? BG punts the ball! You are down to OSU 21-7 you have to go for it on 4th and a millimeter. OSU's first play of the drive a long pass to Ted Ginn. OSU 28 BG 7

Add another touchdown and BG decides to put in Freshman QB Tyler Sheehan and he look s pretty good. On 3rd and 1 Sheehan hands it to Dan Macon he finds a hole and it gone up field I jump up with the rest of the OSU fans and I'm screaming GO GO GO I think he's going to get into the end zone but is brought down at the 26. OSU fans cheer because they stopped Macon and I am cheering for a great BG play. 4th and 1 and it is our last chance to score Sheehan drops back and over throws his man and it nearly picked off, but it was 4th down so we loose the ball and a chance to score.

Over all we played pretty crappy, yet held our own. We could have done better, but could have been crushed even worse. So it was the best and worst of times, but I still love my Falcons and OSU did not cover the spread so SUCK ON THAT OSU FANS!!!!
